Nicotine

According to the latest publication of the World Health Organisation, about 1.3 Billion people smoke. Many people start smoking as adolescents - sometimes to match with their peer group, sometimes because they are curious and sometimes because of their desire to appear more adult. Additionally, adolescents tend to imitate grown ups, such as teachers or parents,
and especially pop or film stars have the possibility to influence their fans.

Smoking is often associated with other habits like drinking alcohol or gambling and is often seen as a way to relieve stress and tension (especially women), while some people abuse smoking to relax (especially men). Nicotine has a higher addictive potential than all other known substances and nicotine addiction is integrated within the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-
10, chapter F 17.2) as well as in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel (DSM-IV, chapter 305.10). Nicotine has contrary effects on the central nervous system: it has the power to activate and to relax, depending on the applied dose. Low doses of nicotine increase blood
pressure and breathing rate, whereas high doses lead to sedation tremor and convulsions.
Smokers have a higher risk of lung cancer, emphysema, and bronchial disorders and smoking
increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
